Hedgehunter/Garden miss Gold Cup
21 February 2007 05:20 GMT

Last year''s runner-up Hedgehunter and recent Ascot winner Monet''s Garden will miss the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March. They were the most notable absentees as 29 entries, headed by Kauto Star, remained in the 16 March race at the latest forfeit stage. Hedgehunter''s target will instead be the Grand National in April, as the BBC Sport website reported two weeks ago. Kauto Star is racing''s new star and 7-4 Gold Cup favourite, but he fell in the Champion Chase at Cheltenham last year. Paul Nicholls'' seven-year-old is unbeaten on all five starts this season, including a comfortable win in the King George VI Chase at Kempton. Full Article

Veteran third baseman Mike Lowell hit a solo home run and scored twice for the Sox before becoming a free agent. Full Article

Kevin Pietersen insists Steve Harmison can overcome his inconsistent form to bowl England to victory in the first Test against West Indies on Monday. Pietersen made a fine 109 in England's second innings effort of 284-8, which set the tourists a stiff target of 401. But Harmison has struggled throughout and took only one wicket in the West Indies' first innings. "We're not concerned with Steve at all - we just know he's going to click," said Pietersen.Full Article

Stick with Vaughan, says Fletcher
23 April 2007 05:30 GMT

Duncan Fletcher has urged new England coach Peter Moores to stick with captain Michael Vaughan for both Test and one-day cricket. Fletcher believes Vaughan can still become a successful batsman in the limited overs game, even though he has not made a hundred in 86 appearances. Vaughan signed off from the World Cup by scoring 79 against West Indies. "He showed the quality he has as a batsman and what he can do if he frees himself up," said Fletcher. "It's just a pity it's taken a little bit longer than he would have wanted. "The poor guy has been in and out of the side [because of injuries] and there was huge pressure on him to come back and continue where he left off. Full Article

Scots name strong Churchill squad
20 April 2007 05:50 GMT

Simon Webster has been named in the Scotland A squad for this summer's Churchill Cup in a bid to build up his fitness ahead of the World Cup. Injury reduced the Edinburgh winger to just one appearance as a replacement during the 2007 Six Nations. Rory Lamont, Phil Godman, Johnnie Beattie, Craig Smith, Stuart Grimes, Graeme Morrison, Scott Lawson and Ben MacDougall are also in the A squad. But Scotland captain Jason White will not be fit enough to take part. White will continue his rehab from a cruciate ligament injury sustained in November. Scotland head coach Frank Hadden has named a 37-man squad for the tournament in England. Full Article

Vaughan bemoans lost opportunity
09 April 2007 05:40 GMT

England captain Michael Vaughan admitted that his side failed to take their chances after a seven-wicket defeat to Australia in Antigua. Australia cruised to 248-3 after England had been dismissed for 247. Vaughan said: "Kevin Pietersen's 100 was a fantastic knock, but the rest of us didn't play well enough around him for us to get to the 280 we needed. "We're certainly making it difficult for ourselves - we need to win our last three games now to get into the semis." Vaughan himself was dismissed for just five and England's batsmen failed to build on a third-wicket partnership of 140 between Pietersen (104) and Ian Bell (77). Full Article

AC Milan 2-2 Bayern Munich
04 April 2007 05:20 GMT

Daniel van Buyten's strike deep into injury time left Bayern Munich as favourites to progress against AC Milan in the Champions League quarter-final. Andrea Pirlo's 40th-minute header gave Milan a deserved lead at half-time. But Van Buyten turned in from close range to draw Bayern level and score a crucial away goal with 12 minutes left. Kaka put Milan back in front from the spot after he was wrongly adjudged to have been fouled by Lucio, but Van Buyten then levelled from the angle. Bayern turned to youngster Michael Rensing to deputise for the vastly-experienced Oliver Kahn, who was suspended - and he produced two world-class saves as Milan dominated the opening half. Hayden shines before rain strikes

The West Indies had no chance to bat in the damp conditions of Antigua and will chase the target of 323 off 50 overs. Earlier, Hayden's superb 158 off 144 balls, his second straight ton, helped Australia to a fine total of 322-6. Ricky Ponting (35) and Michael Clarke (41) also played their part, with Daren Powell (2-59) the Windies` best bowler. Full Article

Ferrari 'can win without Schumi'

You can't always be in front. "But the people who design the car are still there, so there's no reason why they can't just carry on," Brawn said. Indianapolis beat Chicago 29-17 to win Super Bowl XLI in rain-hit Miami. Chicago kept it close until late on, when Kelvin Hayden's key interception and touchdown run sealed their fate. Desert Orchid, or simply "Dessie" to his millions of fans, created history by becoming the only horse to win the King George VI Chase four times. The sight of the grey flying over the fences at Kempton Park or Cheltenham was one of the most memorable in National Hunt racing. And when he won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1989, three cheers rang out among his thousands of adoring followers as he was being unsaddled. Yet his success nearly did not happen. He fell at the first in a novice hurdle at Kempton in 1983 and when he took ages to get to his feet, it seemed the race might have been his last. Full Article

Schumacher triumphs in San Marino

Michael Schumacher won the San Marino Grand Prix for his and Ferrari's first victory of the Formula One season on Sunday. It was the seven-time world champion's 85th career success, and seventh at Ferrari's home circuit, but he was harried all the way by Renault's world champion Fernando Alonso. It was a reversal of last year's nose-to-tail thriller, Alonso having won in 2005 with Schumacher failing to find a way past. This time the German held on to win by two seconds. Schumacher's last victory was at the six-car U.S. Grand Prix last June, a race that turned into a fiasco when all the Michelin teams pulled out before the start. His last real win was the Japanese Grand Prix in October 2004, a season he dominated with 13 victories. Full Article
